How to Survive a Long-Distance Relationship

Relationships are hard work, anyone will agree. But throwing in the added obstacle of living apart from your loved one leads most people to the path of heartbreak. That’s why it’s important to put more effort into your relationship, and here are a few ‘rules’ to follow that will help you keep your long-distance relationship safe.

Call/Text Everyday

Communication and conversation are key parts of any relationship, and when the only thing you can do is talk to each other, it becomes all the more important. Make sure to remind them that you are thinking of them always. Small things like a good morning text or short phone call during your lunch break make a big difference.

Share Everything – Don’t Keep Secrets

Don’t keep your partner in the dark about things that are going on in your life. If you think it would hurt them to hear the bad things, it would hurt them more to hear about it from someone else and think that you do not trust them.

Schedule Video Calling ‘Date Night In’s

Traditional date nights aren’t exactly possible, but you still need to set aside a time that you dedicate just to them, when you can spend some quality time together. Have fun with it, dress up and order in or cook the same kind of food. Or maybe you can set up the same movie and watch it together over Skype.

Make Plans to See Each Other Often

A person can only go so long without seeing the one they love. It is important that you take time to meet physically at least once in 2-3 months. You can take turns coming down to meet each other, or pick a location in between that can also count as a romantic vacation or getaway!

Always Let Them Know How Much You Love and Appreciate Them

Reassurance is vital. You know your boyfriend or girlfriend loves you and cherishes you, but you still love hearing it. Normally, people also tend to express their love through little things they do, but in a long-distance relationship, that also gets harder. So, be creative. Send them handwritten letters as a surprise, or order their favorite food and get it delivered; small things like that matter.

Send Gifts/Care Packages

Send them little gifts and care packages, it shows them you care and that you made an effort. If you know your partner loves a type of candy or snack that is only available in your area, maybe you can pack a few of them up and send them a surprise gift. Or maybe you can send your girlfriend that t-shirt of yours that she loves. Every time she looks at it, she’ll remember you.
